Forms created from flat planes bring warmth to everyday life

Jupiter — Origami-inspired spherical Hinoki pendant light

A spherical form created by assembling just three flat pieces. Made from premium hinoki wood veneer, the grain softly diffuses light. Easy to assemble, this light brings a gentle glow to living rooms, bedrooms, and other everyday spaces.

Why this shape?

Discovery

I encountered an intriguing paper craft that forms a sphere from a single sheet.

Inspiration and Reference

The Genesis of the Idea

I felt a simple yet beautiful light could be created. The shade could be formed using a single layer. I then began the product development process.

Problem

When recreating it, I found that the joints were difficult and the sphere could not hold its shape.

Improvement

Through trial and error, I developed a structure where three flat pieces interlock to form a stable sphere.

Material

Highly translucent natural wood was selected, and the tension of the grain helps maintain the shape.

Naming

Inspired by the floating light and striped grain, it was named Jupiter.

Design Registration

The design is registered in Japan, and the European Union. U.S. Design Patent Pending.

Design Registration

Simple is best

The sphere is formed by the balance of tension and resistance within the wood grain. The natural wood softly emits light, revealing its beautiful texture.
